Dong Mingzhu was the youngest child in her family. She has seven siblings. When she was a child, she wanted to be a soldier. Dong lived in Nanjing, where she attended vocational school. She is a widow and she has one son. He lived with grandmother, starting in 1990, so Dong could leave Nanjing for her career. She has not had a day off in 20 years. She enjoys reading, including books like Jane Eyre and Gone with the Wind, which are her favorite books. She collects shawls. Dong has ran for the National People’s Congress twice. She is a member of the China Democratic National Construction Association. After graduation, she remained in Nanjing and worked in research for 15 years. Dong worked at a chemistry laboratory. She started working for Gree Electric in 1990. She was a salesperson and sold air conditioners. She worked in Anhui and became one of the companies top salespeople. By the mid-1990s she became sales director. She became President in 2001. She has published two books, including an autobiography titled Regretless Pursuit which was a bestseller in China. Regretless Pursuit was made into a television series on China Central Television.
In 2013, Dong was named one a Forbes Asia “Woman in the Mix” for business.[4
